On the 19th of December, the morning after the Christmas ball, Robin
and I left the dorms around 9am to head to Tartu, Estonia. Tartu is the second largest city in the South-East of Estonia well known for its university.
Firstly we took the bus to Valka, crossed the border to Valga and due to the rain we stayed in the bus station of Valga. Here we noticed that there would also go a train to Tartu, an hour earlier as well as that it would be cheaper. However the train station would be a longer walk to the hotel than from the bus station, although knowing that we had to walk a bit longer we took the train. This train was very fancy, even fancier than in the Netherlands. This train had very lovely seats, it was very wide, as well as that there was free Wifi, you could even charge your phone or laptop for free! After arrival we walked to our hostel. This hostel was located right on the market square. For, a few hours we stayed in the hostel. Then we walked outside and had a lovely time there. For dinner, we went to a Asian restaurant since Robin wanted to eat Asian food. The place was hard to find but the food was definitely worth it.
The next day, we walked around the highlights of Tartu. First we went to the leaning house located on the square to take a picture like those people do at the Tower of Pisa. Secondly, we went up the Toomemägi, meaning the Cathedral Hill. Here we visited the Cathedral which is a ruins however one part is built and made into a museum, here we learned all about the history of Tartu’s University as well as about the Cathedral. It was a good museum since it was very interactive. In the afternoon we went Tartu’s city museum. This museum very well captured the history of Tartu. Afterwards we went to this lovely Georgian restaurant where we had a fun time.
The following day we travelled home with two trains to Valmiera. For the train station we walked home. In the morning we just walked a little bit around, went to the shops to buy some food for the way. Also we walked around the hill instead of going over the hill.
Love,
Joëlle
