11 November 2014 | Letland, Valmiera
On the 11th of November 2014 there was a torch walk to remember the fallen Latvians during all the wars and times of occupation. This is a day of memorial in Latvia and therefore a national day so the flag has to be shown. All classes in university stop at 3 o’clock. At 4pm all the student met in front of the school to join in a torch walk towards one of the cemeteries of Valmiera. First we walked with a group of students to the Valmiera museum where we waited for another 1.5 before walking with a massive group along the road towards the cemetery. It was crowded, I have never seen so many Latvians in one location. It was very beautiful seeing all the torches, all the lights.
I felt some kind of piece. It was beautiful to see. When we arrived in the cemetery it was like a mas in the church. However it was very beautiful. They even sung the national anthem.
I do not regret seeing or going there, however I didn’t like the fact that we had to wait for such a long time. However it was very beautiful to see the crowd of people walking to one place and especially all those lights in the darkness.
Love,
Joëlle
