Today I have had a daytrip to Katwe salt mining, the flamingo lake, the fishermen’s village and lake Kikorongo. At 10 o’clock we had arranged two boda boda’s to arrive at The Elephant Center Campsite. They arrived a bit later and eventually we left at half past 10. We travelled by boda along the main road which heads to the Republic of Congo. In the first town we turned left and used a dirt road to Katwe. The distance from the Elephant Center to Katwe is around 38kms. Along the way, we saw the Ugandan impala and the Angola cows. As we reached Katwe, we first saw the crater lake from which the locals do salt mining. Here, we walked to the bottom of the lake and one of the boda drivers explained the salt mining routine. It was interesting to learn and see how in fact local people do the salt mining. After the explanation and looking around we climbed back up to the boda and reached Katwes town. Here we visited the catholic church and the fishermen’s village. The fishermen’s village consisted of many boat laying on the shore line. The fishermen were making the nets for the next fishing trip. We saw a few marabou storks and other birds. After the fishermen’s village we reached Katwe’s trading centre. We took a drink and ate our packed lunch. After a chill conversation and a cold beer, we headed to the flamingo lake. Sadly, there were no flamingo’s at the moment. They only come during the rainy season. As you know, at the moment it’s the rainy season however this part of Uganda, where TECC and Katwe are located, is very dry. It’s rarely that we have rain. After the flamingo lake we headed to lake Kikorongo. Along the shore line of Lake Edward we saw a few hippos. Here we stopped to take some pictures. We were very close to the hippo’s. Then we continued our way to the lake driving through the national park (free route). Along this route we saw Elephants, Antelopes, buffalos, impalas and many types of birds. My boda driver even allowed me to drive his boda for a while, which was pretty cool, especially as I drove through the national park (for free!). After our last stop on the road seeing the buffalos we reached the main road which shows Lake Kikorongo. Through the bush we saw the lake. It was not particular beautiful but it was a nice sight. After the lake, it was only a short drive back to TECC.
Overall, it was a lovely but exhausting trip. I was definitely tired when returning to TECC. I am happy I took this trip and had the chance of seeing this many animals for free (sadly we did not see the flamingos). Hope you had a great day as well.
Love,
Omutaka muzungu (the white who has stayed for some/long time)
