Like a lot of you know I am in Papua, in Indonesia. To be especially I am in the district of Wamena. I already told Wamena means fat pig. But why does it mean fat pig. I will explain/tell the story and it goes as follows:
A long time ago there was a young woman who had a pig. This pig was called Blacky. When Blacky got pregnant it gave birth to seven beautiful pigs. The woman took the seventh pig and took in the house, she cuddled and loved the pig very much. She called this pig Wamena.
When one day a western man came to this district and wanted to know where he was. He asked this women ‘Where are we?’ The women pointed at the pig and said ‘Wamena’. Clearly there was a misunderstanding. But ever since this place is called Wamena after the small pig. But why is fat pig than also allowed, because if you take the smallest pig and you treat this pig different it will be the fattest pig in the end.
Here in Wamena and district it is way more important to have a pig than a lot of money, because a pig is worth a lot of money. So here it is more important to have many pigs than to have money.
It still counts like this around Wamena. In the city Wamena ,it is important to have money and pigs, because money means that they can buy stuff for the pig, and the pig means that they are more wealthier.
So which is more important money or a pig?
Love,
Joëlle
