Like I think I probably told before I am in war-zone. To be short the sultan of Sulu, which is an Island of the Philippines, lost his property to the government of the Philippines but then the sultan of Sulu realized that by rule Sabah is still his and tried to claim Sabah back. The sultan of Sulu didn’t want to talk about it but just came to sabah and started the war. The Malaysian people have tried to talk with them, but they didn’t want to. Now it is the other way around.
This meant that the group before us got evacuated from Mantanani Island and the group after us got evacuated from a lot and that’s why they joined us on Mantanani. So far a lot of people died already 84 of the Philippines and 52 of Malaysian army or police, so far 1 foreigner of at least that is what they think.
The Malaysian army gave the redline to the country, which means that you can’t be outside after 10pm and one person came outside and got shot. Later when they checked his id, it didn’t show he was Malaysian or Philippino. So they think it is somebody who is illegally in the country. All the information about the death total we heard at last on the 19th of march. So far a lot of things could have changed. The only thing we know we are still in war-zone. People are still forbidden to go to camp Tinangol (The first camp of this program), Batu Puteh (homestay).
On the 17th of march the Phillipinos and the Malaysians were talking about this war and the conclusion. But they forgot to ask the sultan of Sulu to join or was this just to show the tourist it was okay? I don’t know. Let’s hope they will talk together with the sultan of Sulu later.
I never thought being in a war-zone would happen to me, or yes I did think of it, when I might work for a charity service, but not during my travelling. I also never thought being in a war-zone can be so relaxed, you would expect to be stressed or scared but it actually is fine. At first it seemed funny, as a joke, but now it starts to get pretty serious.
I do notice that there is a war going on, especially because the police is more on the street and a lot of big guns when we see the police.
At least for now I am still okay. Let’s hope this war will figured out soon.
Cya,
Joëlle
Ps. I am surviving a war-zone!
