Thursday the 18th of February 2016 there were elections for the parliament and president of Uganda. As is known Yoweri Museveni has been the president for 35 years in Uganda. He has given Uganda political and economic stability while also improving public education and corruption within the army. Although he has brought many great things to the country, he is indirectly known to be corrupt. Many colleagues of mine speak openly about this election and the change they hope it brings. Especially, if the opposition in the parliament would in fact mostly come from the opposition, a change in the country could happen. Although, most Ugandans want change they somewhat expect Museveni to regain power, resulting he will reign for another 10 years.
Friday the 19th of February 2016, I discovered that all social media; What’s App, Facebook etc. has been shut down. This has been done to limit the conversations regarding this elections. The social media shut down last at least till the announcement on Saturday. It could be longer if there will be unrest/chaos within the country which could especially be expected in big cities. I was supposed to travel this weekend to the other camp but I would have to go through Kasese (which is the districts main city), therefore I have cancelled this trip and will go somewhere next week or in the weekend. This measure is taken regarding my safety. Especially, since they do not know the results and how this reflects upon the country.
Saturday the 20th of February 2016, it has been announced around 4 o’clock that Museveni won. He won with 60% of the votes while his strongest opponent Kizza Besigye only received 35% of the votes. My colleagues where able to tell me that they were not surprised about the winner, although they had hoped differently. But as they said, previously presidents would directly kill someone while Museveni kills someone with poison and it cannot directly seen as the presidents fault. As he has a lot of power, most assume he has corrupted the elections.
Sunday the 21st of February, the social media shut down has been stopped. From on today it is possible to reach others through the use of social media.
Bye,
Joëlle

Corien:
Hi Joëlle,
Het is daar wel erg anders dan hier. Wij maar klagen, terwijl jij daar krijgt te zien hoe het er werkelijk aan toegaat in een corrupt land.
Succes, Corien -

Not 35 and 10 years, but 30 and 5. -

Joëlle:
Yes you are right about the 30 years. Regarding the 5 it's true but most likely he will reign for two periods of 5 years.
